Rolex Batman 116710 vs 126710

In the past few years, Rolex has shown what they really do best: small, iterative but tangible changes to their timepieces that have given birth to new classics. Rolex didn’t reinvent the wheel; but made slight improvements to solid models and fan favorites.

Among the most popular new models in recent years are the GMT-Master II models, this time equipped with the Jubilee bracelet. The five-piece links were last seen on the GMT-Master generations ago and at last, fans of the modern GMT can now get theirs with an elegant, multi-link bracelet.

There’s more to the new Rolex GMT-Master II models than the Jubilee bracelet however. We took a closer look at the original Batman ref 116710, side by side with the current ref 126710, and discovered a few more subtle differences. Here’s what sets the two apart.

THE BRACELET

The most obvious change to the current Rolex Batman (ref 126710) is the five link Jubilee bracelet. The original Rolex Batman with an Oyster bracelet (ref 116710) was launched in 2013, and has since been discontinued, along with the black bezel Rolex GMT Master II. To date, current models for both Batman and Pepsi GMT Master watches are only equipped with stainless steel Jubilee bracelets.

Although the bracelet has been updated, both Batman models have the Oysterlock clasp, which features the Easylink comfort system – an extension system that allows the wearer to adjust the bracelet by 5mm without using any tools.

THE CASE

This is one difference that only becomes apparent with a closer look or when both watches are worn on the wrist. The previous Rolex Batman comes with a “Super Case” with fatter lugs and a more prominent shape. The current Rolex Batman comes with a more refined case and thinner lugs. Both still measure 40mm in diameter but the current model has a more tapered shape.

THE SIGNATURE

Upon closer inspection, one will notice that the current Rolex Batman bears the brand’s new dial signature below the 6 o’clock hour marker. Where it only used to say “Swiss” and “Made”, Rolex has added the brand logo, a small coronet, in between the two words. Beyond this very subtle change, both dials are virtually identical, with Chromalight hour markers and a blue GMT hand.

THE MOVEMENT

Similar to its time and date watches, Rolex has also updated the movement of their GMT watches. The previous Rolex Batman was powered by Caliber 3186, while the current model now runs using the Caliber 3285.

With 10 patents to its name, the Caliber 3285 boasts an improvement of 70-hours power reserve (from 50 hours), thanks in part to its new and improved Chronergy escapement. Like all Rolex watches since 2015, Caliber 3285 guarantees a -2/+2 seconds per day precision. All current GMT-Master II models run on the new Caliber 3285 movement.

With its tapered case and Jubilee bracelet, the current Rolex GMT-Master II Batman looks like a dressier option to the hefty and sporty looking Batman with an Oyster bracelet. If you’re inclined to go with improved technology, the current Rolex Batman should be right up your alley; but the previous Rolex Batman is still as robust and reliable as Rolex watches come.

Both timepieces are currently available at SwissWatchExpo, it’s just a matter of deciding which one to get your hands on.
